John R. Gates lived in this house on South Street in 1900 with his wife Sarah. The house stands today and looks remarkably the same, despite the hundred plus years that have passed.

It is possible that the Gates family lived in this house as early as 1880. Census records from 1880 and 1894 show that Gates lived in Chelsea, but the South street address does not appear until the 1900 census.

Like it did in 1900, the Gates House serves as a family residence today.
